“Kattengat” means a space so narrow that only a cat could squeeze through. This street was named that when it was a smelly ditch connecting two canals. As the city expanded, it was filled in and went from being on the ignored outskirts to a central Amsterdam location. Pro tip: the bridge that you see from the far side of the Kattengat has Stubbe’s Haring stall, widely considered to be the best in Amsterdam.
