This hidden courtyard is only open to visitors at certain times. If it’s not open now, see if you can come back when it is. This was the Amsterdam home of the begijns, a Catholic community for women. There were houses here by 1346, and the courtyard was built by 1389. When Amsterdam went Protestant, the city took the church, but the houses were private property. The begijns quietly went about their business and, when anti-Catholic feeling wasn’t so high, they built a hidden church in the house that faces their original church.
